The AMC Matador is a series of American automobiles that were manufactured and marketed by American Motors Corporation (AMC) across two generations, 1971-1973 (mid-size) and 1974-1978 (full-size), in two-door hardtop (first generation) and coupe (second generation) versions, as well as in four-door sedan and station wagon body styles.

Matador was technically the last midsize car AMC ever made. The company produced the smaller Spirit and Concord in the early Eighties before it was reduced to a Renault-Jeep-Eagle enterprise. AMC offered a range of engines on its first Matador, like most of its models. The smallest of the group was a 232 cubic inch (3.8L) inline-six, with a 258 (4.2L) inline-six as a one-better that was standard on the wagon. The other three engines were V8s, of 304 (5.0L), 360 (5.9L), and 401 (6.6L) displacements.

The Matador started out in life as the midsize sedan offering from American Motors in 1971. Ever the penny pincher, AMC created the "brand new" Matador off the bones of its predecessor, the Rebel.
